During October 2017, in Berlin’s Jugend Museum (http://bit.ly/2EOV3TC) the seminar PixidaStraße (= Compass Street) was organized, as a part of the START- Create Cultural Change program.
PixidaStraße navigated the gender trainees to a theatrical journey. The idea was born out of the desire to enrich the already wide range of methods that teachers use in workshops about gender identities. In cooperation with the Theatre of the Oppressed group Madalena- Berlin, I designed an educational project specialized for teachers. The main goal was to create a safe space for teachers to develop a critical thinking through drama exercises. Using role games, “image theatre” and “newspaper theatre”– methods based on the Theatre of the Oppressed movement, the participants discovered the various ways in which gender stereotypes are illustrated and internalized. Through their own observations, emotions and actions taken from the angle of one being oppressed, teachers now possess new tools to empower others regarding identity issues and gender expression.
